A high school football opener in the Sacramento, Calif., area was canceled after a player on one of the teams collapsed on the sideline and later died at the hospital.
Metro League rivals Kennedy High School and Johnson were facing off to begin the spring season. Kennedy senior lineman, Emmanuel Antwi, collapsed along the sideline in the second half and CPR had to be performed.
Antwi had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance where he died, according to CNN.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help Antwi's mother to cover funeral expenses and help take care of her two other children. The organizers said Antwi was 18 years old.
No official cause of death has been released.
The Sacramento Unified School District released a statement late Friday that was reported by The Sacramento Bee. The statement read:
“Tonight, one of our student-athletes suffered an emergency at a football game between Hiram Johnson and Kennedy. We do not have further public information or comment we can provide at this time. Our thoughts are with the athlete, his family, and our Sac City Unified Community.”
