A Georgia community is hoping for the speedy recovery of a high school student who has been in a coma after a batting cage accident last Monday.
Jeremy Medina, a senior at Gainesville High School, was accidentally struck in the head with a baseball bat while using the batting cages at 1:20 on Nov. 20.
“As a player followed through on his swing, Jeremy leaned into the net and was struck in the head,” Gainesville High School principal Jamie Green told WSB-TV. “There is no horseplay, no misconduct, and no intent.”
First responders helped get Jeremy to the hospital, where a team of medical professionals worked to keep him alive.
“The nature of these injuries is very complicated, and they are also very unpredictable,” said Michael Cormican, NGHS medical director for critical care.
Medina played as a pitcher and catcher for the school team during the 2022 season.
Nearby Chestatee High School's baseball team also reacted to the news, saying that Medina was in their prayers.
"Jeremy is full of fight and grit on the baseball field, and we pray he continues to fight with the same grit," the team wrote on Facebook. "We continue to lift up those involved with the accident in our prayers and positive thoughts."
Jeremy’s family says their son had a scholarship offer to play baseball in college and dreamed of playing professionally.
Gainesville High School says they will look into the safety operations for the baseball facility to see if changes are needed.
