Last week seven people were injured during a chemical spill at a New Jersey LA Fitness. The hazmat team was called to the gym, located in the Brunswick Shopping Center, after several people reported a strong chemical smell.

According to the Daily Targum, the spill occurred during a chlorine delivery at seven in the morning. It was contained by eight in the morning, but law enforcement still requested residents and gymgoers to avoid the area for several hours.

Several injured people were transported to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital with respiratory issues, including the driver of the chlorine delivery truck.

"Upon arrival, we did find a chlorine smell coming out of the building, so we did evacuate. We sent some members in their full protective gear to make sure that the building was totally evacuated," said North Brunswick Fire Department chief Leo Whalen.

According to CBS News, the Middlesex County Hazmat team is investigating the incident to understand exactly how the spill occurred.

After the spill was contained and cleaned, LA Fitness employees spent the afternoon airing out the building of the chemical smell. The LA Fitness location is open again this week.
