A high school baseball player in Georgia died Tuesday after spending three weeks in a coma following a batting cage accident.

Jeremy Medina, 18, a pitcher and catcher for Gainesville High School was accidentally hit in the head by a teammate's bat last month.

According to NBC News, after being declared brain dead by doctors, his family had hoped that they would be able to donate his organs in accordance with his wishes.

"We began the process of seeking a visa for his grandmother so she could travel to be with us for the honor walk," his family wrote. "Sadly, his heart stopped last night about an hour before grandma arrived."

The Gainesville City School System posted a tribute video to Medina on X last Wednesday.

ā€œThe life of Jeremy Medina will forever impact the lives of our entire community. His passing will mean renewed life for many others as an organ donor,ā€ the post said.

The accident happened back on Nov. 20.

ā€œAs a player followed through on his swing, Jeremy leaned into the net and was struck in the head,ā€ Gainesville High School principal Jamie Green told WSB-TV. ā€œThere is no horseplay, no misconduct, and no intent.ā€

Jeremyā€™s family says their son had a scholarship offer to play baseball in college and dreamed of playing professionally.

Gainesville High School says they will look into the safety operations for the baseball facility to see if changes are needed.
