Efforts to save a 68-year-old Illinois man failed after bystanders pulled him from the pool at the Buffalo Grove Park District Fitness Center.

According to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner, a 911 called reported a man in his 60s passed out in the pool and had since been removed from the pool.

When first responders arrived, CPR was in progress and AED had been administered while the fire department was responding.

Buffalo Grove director of Communications and Community Engagement, Molly Gillespie, said crews initiated advanced life support care and rushed the man to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said the man, who was later identified as Patrick J. Gasey, died a short time later after being transported to the hospital.

An autopsy performed on Gasey showed he died as a result of drowning due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
