A Maryland student-athlete died last week after experiencing a medical emergency on the Franklin High School football field in Reisterstown during the football team's first practice of the season.

First responders were called to the school at 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday over reports that a football player had collapsed during practice.

According to the Daily Voice, lifesaving measures had already begun when first responders arrived, and the 16-year-old was taken to area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

“The student experienced a medical emergency this morning and was transported to the hospital where he later passed away. We are devastated by this news,” principal J. O’Connell Kieran wrote in the Wednesday email. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the student’s family and loved ones. We will share more information as soon as we are permitted to do so.”

The Baltimore County Police have since initiated an investigation into the student's death. The inquiry remains open pending the results of an autopsy.

CBS News reported that Franklin High School has an athletic emergency plan that shows the nearest automated external defibrillator (or AED). It would have been inside the press box at the field.
