In Georgetown, S.C., an argument between high school basketball coaches escalated on Wednesday night. Timothy Hallman, a 64-year-old assistant coach, was arguing with a fellow assistant in the school gym. When things got heated, Hallman ran out to his car and returned with a gun.

According to KTVZ.com, Hallman “tried to re-enter the gym where he was stopped at the door and asked to leave.”

Police were called to the scene immediately. Hallman had already left the scene, so police found him at home where he was arrested without incident. The handgun was also recovered. Police told KTVZ.com that Hallman was, “charged with possession of a firearm on school property.”

The increasing regularity of violence and other altercations at youth and high school sports has been noted by governing bodies like the National Federation of State High School Associations and the National Association of Sports Officials.

In a recent interview with AB, Bill Topp president of NASO said, “We probably get three to five incidents from around the country that cross our desk every week — mostly involving competitive youth parents, sometimes coaches. It really is a sad state of affairs.”

While Topp most often manages altercations involving officials, parent-to-coach violence and coach-to-coach violence are making the headlines more often.

In the case of Hallman, he spent Wednesday night at the Georgetown County Detention Center and attended his bond hearing on Thursday. A court date has not yet been reported.
