A bus carrying the IU Indianapolis men's basketball team caught fire along Interstate 275 Sunday evening, as the team was traveling home from a game in Northern Kentucky.
According to Yahoo Sports, IU associate athletic director Ed Holdaway said the "[The fire] quickly spread, engulfing the entire bus."
Video posted to social media shows a smoke coming from the bus and fire crews shutting down traffic as they attempt to extinguish the blaze. Little was left of the bus save for a charred shell with burned seats and no windows.
Most players and staff members "were only able to get out with what was on their person," Holdaway said. As a result, there was "considerable loss of personal items," according to Holdaway, including cell phones, wallets and gear.
All members of the IU Indianapolis traveling party were evacuated without injury.
A statement from the school's athletic department said the issue was due to a mechanical issue that caused a fire around Kent, Ind.
โMost importantly everyone is OK,โ athletic director Luke Bosso said.
A school bus picked up the IU Indianapolis basketball team from the side of I-275, according to Holdaway, and transported the Jaguars to a local restaurant. They remained there a few hours until the charter bus company sent a second bus to pick them up. The team finally arrived home safely late Sunday night.
