A high school cross country athlete in Puyallup, Wash., was hit by a truck and seriously injured while participating in practice.
According to KOMO News, the incident took place at the intersection of 7th St. NE and 2nd St. NE. while the student was out on a run with his team. He was immediately attended to by a coach and was later taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
“I was almost to the stop sign and he had already stepped into the street. It looked like he put his hand up to the truck,” Jessica Orth, who witnessed the crash, told KIRO 7.
But the truck didn’t stop.
“And he fell and slide a little bit on the gravel,” Orth recalled. “His eyes were in the back of his head and he was not conscious or speaking at that time.”
The student's condition is currently unknown.
Police do not believe the driver was impaired during the crash, and the driver was arrested at the scene over an unrelated misdemeanor charge.
The Puyallup Police Department stated it is working with the Puyallup School District to support the school and district community.
