More and more has been written these days about the increased number of concussions suffered by football players.

All sorts of remedies have been suggested, most of them useless and some of them absurd.

Rules changes, extra penalties, this, that, and the other. One clown has even suggested that mothers start forbidding their boys from playing football - ever!

It wasn't all that long ago, a few years perhaps, that the noted columnist, Thomas Sowell, came up with the idea that would in all probability solve the problem. A problem, which, for years and years, did not exist.

Sowell's advice: simply replace the rock-hard plastic crown of the helmet with that which had been used for the crown for all those years since the game began: Make the crown of the helmet out of hard, stiff leather. No more rock-hard plastic and reduce concussions to the negligible amount that had been the rule since football started.

Sowell's idea received exactly zero attention. If they did it and it worked, then the big wigs and the bleeding hearts would be deprived of all the whining and hand-wringing that we now observe.

How about it, football fans? Makes sense, doesn't it? Wouldn't it be worth a try?
