John W. Stewart Center for Student Activities (STUAC) Renovation -- Morrisville State College

Morrisville, NY
Construction Cost: $10.1 million
Area / Square Feet: 48,800
Occupancy Date: June 2013

The redesign of the Student Activities Center (STUAC) at Morrisville State College creates a more spacious, contemporary and attractive multifunctional building. Introduction of daylight deep within the windowless facility was partly achieved through a new skylight that helped bring clarity to circulation routes. Other renovations included the defunct swimming pool’s conversion into a new weights and fitness area, with a dramatic balcony level that engages the bucolic landscape via a new window wall.

By infilling floor areas that were previously large openings, the facility was able to increase programmable space by 5,500 square feet. Previously, mismatched floor heights and a lack of visibility resulted in disconnected spaces that were not ADA accessible. Two new staircases, improved elevator circulation, the leveling of the lower floor, and additions of windows to both the exterior and interior spaces help today’s users readily recognize how each space functions. Upgrades to the existing upper and lower lobby accommodate all building users and event spectators, as well as a thriving and growing student activities program.
