Penn State University Intramural Recreation, Building Renovation and Addition, Phases 1 and 2

University Park, PA 2017

Project Description

Penn State’s updated Intramural Recreation Building provides a new face for what had been a nondescript but functional building. In phases one and two of the three-phase master plan, the design team created an inviting and transparent image while establishing organizational and wayfinding improvements. An open, dynamic and energizing atmosphere reflects the active program of the building, providing students with an unforgettable sense of place.

Designers implemented a hybrid ventilation system ideal for spring and fall days to offer the unique experience of bringing the outdoors in. When conditions are appropriate, outside air is drawn directly into key fitness spaces through the automated windows along the facade and through a precooled outside atrium, before being exhausted at the roof. Heat and moisture are drawn away from exercising occupants as fresh air circulates.

Functional student recreation and multipurpose spaces — gymnasia, fitness spaces, locker rooms, lounges — were significantly expanded. New spaces were integrated seamlessly with existing ones. Since the facility opened for student use, participation has grown exponentially.
