As a unique and innovative campus resource, Fanshawe College’s remarkable three-floor Student Wellness Centre incorporates all campus athletics programming with significant space for a spectrum of health services. In addition to flexible fitness areas for strength training, cardio and group exercise and a 36-foot climbing wall, the building houses the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic, a pharmacy, a juice bar, quiet rooms, and spaces for massage therapy, yoga, meditation and other wellness services to help students deal with stress.

The original fitness and gymnasium facility, including the double gymnasium, was built in 1995 at a time when the campus population was significantly smaller at 8,600 full-time students. A third gymnasium was added in 2003 to replace another aged gymnasium slated for demolition when full-time enrollment growth had reached 11,133 students. Today, full-time enrollment surpasses 14,200, representing an increase of 27 percent in the past 10 years and 65 percent since the original facility was built.

The building was designed with sustainability in mind and features dynamic glass to reduce glare and solar heat gain in the summer, solar hot water heating, a green roof, LED lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and low-VOC paints and finishes. In addition, the facility recycles and diverts waste from landfills.
