Maltz Special Warfare Aquatic Training Center

San Antonio-Lackland, Texas
Construction Cost: $67.5 million
Area / Square Feet: 76,000
Occupancy Date: April 2024

The Maltz Special Warfare Aquatic Training Center, a 76,000-square-foot facility at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland’s Chapman Training Annex, supports the demanding development of Air Force Special Warfare personnel. Named in honor of Master Sgt. Michael Maltz, a pararescueman who gave his life in service, the center combines advanced aquatics training with mission-focused readiness programs. The facility houses two enclosed, climate-controlled indoor pools designed for year-round, high-intensity use. Pool 1 measures 54 meters by 25 meters with two movable bulkheads, while Pool 2 measures 52 meters by 25 meters with one movable bulkhead and a mid-depth transition zone. The design required full system redundancy to ensure uninterrupted operation, and the deep-water tanks demanded large-diameter piping and sizable mechanical systems. Coordinating these systems β€” along with extensive under-pool piping, conduit routes and structural elements β€” required precise collaboration and careful detailing beneath the tanks. Supporting spaces include classrooms, locker rooms, rehabilitation areas and a human performance center between the pools. Serving candidates for Pararescue, Combat Control, Tactical Air Control Party, and Special Reconnaissance, the Maltz Center exemplifies an advanced, mission-ready aquatics environment.
