TIME FOR AN UPGRADE

With the University of Connecticut’s existing 25,000-square-foot facility considered inadequate for several years and with university enrollment on the rise, there was a great need for a new, state-of-the-art Recreation Center. The resulting facility represents a collaboration of the design team and student body, and creates a comprehensive facility that delivers a wide-range of recreation options.

POOL MANAGEMENT

The aquatics area is unique, as the 7,000-square-foot of combined water surface area — including two bodies of water — are served by one mechanical system. This allows the bodies of water to be programmed separately while allowing the university to only maintain one mechanical system. The competition pool can be primarily be used for lap swimming, while the leisure pool can be used as a more active-water space. The leisure pool includes amenities such as a large vortex, water basketball and water volleyball, and a hydrotherapy bench.

OTHER AMENITIES

The new facility totals 212,575 square feet and includes a 20,000-square-foot fitness center, activity spaces for cardiovascular and strength training facilities, racquetball courts, six full-size basketball courts, six volleyball courts, badminton courts, a running track, multipurpose sports areas, a group cycling studio, a 58-foot climbing wall, a wellness center and flexible spaces for events and activities for use by the students and the UConn community.
