University of Washington Intramural Activities Building (IMA) Pool

Construction Cost: $28.4 million
Area / Square Feet: 25,000
Occupancy Date: November 2023

The locker rooms and swimming pool at the University of Washington’s Intramural Activities Building had not been significantly updated since the building’s construction in 1966. The complex occupied-renovation/addition project utilized a progressive design-build process to meet the project objectives. The completed project increased the pool size from eight to 14 swim lanes and created one of the country’s largest gender-inclusive locker facilities. A collaborative process with staff and users focused on equity, accessibility and universal design principles to create a welcoming environment.

The reconstruction of the pool involved a surgical approach with tight existing conditions and the extensive existing grade beam foundations. The expansion of the pool cut the side walls of the L-shaped pool into a 3,600-square-foot addition. The existing concrete pool gutter was replaced, and the pool mechanical systems were completely overhauled. A new sloping ceiling and clerestory windows significantly increased natural light across the entire pool surface. A landscape planter creates a biophilic view to the exterior.

The existing 13,000-square-foot locker rooms were rebuilt to provide three fully accessible, gender-inclusive locker rooms accommodating 3,500 lockers, 17 cabanas with showers, toilets and sinks, and 19 changing rooms.
