Sun Prairie West High School Natatorium

Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
Construction Cost: $40 million
Area / Square Feet: 450,000 (total project)
Occupancy Date: August 2022

After eight years of planning, dreaming and preparing, the Sun Prairie Area School District opened the brand new Sun Prairie West High School just before the start of the 2022-23 school year. Community members voted to pass the $164 million referendum in 2019 that supported the development of the new community asset, along with a variety of other community enhancements for the district.

The new natatorium features an eight-lane, 25-yard competition pool that will be used for competitive swimming, high school and middle school swim and gym classes, learn-to-swim programs, club swimming and open swim. Water depths range from 48 inches to 12 feet, 6 inches to support one-meter diving. The district has experienced a significant spike in enrollments — Sun Prairie West High School is now one of two high schools in the area. In fall 2022, it welcomed 1,300 students who will have access to the school’s new and diverse amenities.

At the forefront of design was an accessible, sustainable and safe natatorium that would serve the district and its users for years to come. The facility was named a 2022 Climate Champion and contributes to Dane County’s Climate Action Plan to reduce gas emissions 50 percent by 2030.
