City Lake Aquatic Center

High Point, N.C.
Construction Cost: $21 million
Area / Square Feet: 16,231
Occupancy Date: May 2023

Following an aquatic evaluation in 2018, the City Lake Park Pool’s systems were deemed non-operable, and the pool closed in 2019. A two-phase master plan was developed that provided several infrastructure and facility recommendations for the approximately 243.3-acre park.

Emphasis was placed on the importance of preserving the park’s heritage throughout the revitalization. Key design considerations included accessibility, functionality, historical preservation and multigenerational appeal. To maximize programming opportunities, the existing pool was transformed into two pools: a 50-meter competition pool and a leisure pool. The new leisure pool features zero-depth entry with an interactive play structure and water table for optimal play opportunities, as well as a current channel. A brand-new splash pad parallel to the competition pool is equipped with a Life Floor safety flooring solution that is slip-resistant for safe aquatic play.

The original two waterslides have been refurbished and a new dual waterslide was added to the multislide complex, providing a thrilling and competitive racing experience complete with a timing system that is unique for historic recreation facilities of this nature.
