Located in Reed Keppler Park, the ARC Center in West Chicago, Ill., connects with 89 acres of the district’s outdoor recreation amenities and the Dyer Nature Trail. The massing of the building is organized so the large gymnasium boxes are nestled toward the back of the park, allowing the main entry facade to capitalize on views to the exterior and a more appropriate pedestrian scale.
By utilizing pre-engineered building structures for the gyms, the project realized appreciable cost savings and was able to invest in quality building materials and energy-efficient design measures.
The new 70,000-square-foot facility, one of the largest and most modern indoor facilities in Illinois, features a multipurpose, three-court hardwood gymnasium; a multi-activity gymnasium; an elevated walking/jogging track; event and party room rental spaces; food service support spaces; 7,800 square feet devoted to a fitness center, as well as dance, aerobic and spinning studios; and a 3,600-square-foot Kids Zone indoor playground.
