This project involved a renovation, expansion and new addition at McMaster’s Hamilton campus to integrate student athletics, recreation and wellness services under one roof. Despite the constrained site, the design emphasizes architectural harmony with the existing campus while maintaining connections to surrounding green spaces.
The Student Activity Building, known as “The HUB,” and the PULSE Fitness Centre are designed to support the whole student experience. They offer multifunctional spaces for learning, socializing, wellness and physical activities. The design fosters inclusivity with accessible entry points, flexible event spaces and dedicated areas for cultural practices.
Sustainability is a core focus, with the building targeting LEED Gold certification. Features include stormwater capture systems, sustainable materials such as post-consumer fireclay tiles, and provisions for future solar panels. Biophilic design principles are integrated into dining areas, reflecting nature and enhancing student wellbeing.
The PULSE Fitness Centre plays a key role in extending the heart of campus north and completing McMaster’s residential and athletic precinct, offering modern facilities that include strength training, women-only fitness areas and a climbing wall.
