Hired in 2019, the design team chose replacement of the existing community center in greater Midland over a renovation or addition after determining a new building was the most cost-effective approach. The new multi-use facility consists of two phases, connecting the existing Midland Curling Center to a broader multigenerational recreation facility.
The new center’s design draws inspiration from the philosophy of Midland architect Alden B. Dow, known for creating spaces that feel larger and more connected by visually borrowing from adjacent rooms and landscapes. Views, daylight and transparency extend the perception of space beyond physical boundaries.
Community amenities include party rooms, a youth activity lounge and senior spaces. Recreation spaces include fitness rooms that feature cardio and weight training equipment, as well as a gymnasium with a walking/jogging track. Phase 1 saw the addition to the aquatics center of a leisure pool with zero-depth entry, a lazy river and four lap lanes. A spa and dry sauna are accessed separately from the pools. Phase 2 added a dedicated eight-lane lap pool.
The community center also incorporates an early childhood education component, as well as significant site development, landscaping, play areas and engagement to Midland’s Central Park. In addition to patron spaces, there are also administrative and building support spaces with views into landscaped site work and a play lawn.
