Campus varsity, intramural and recreation programs had outgrown the sports facilities at SVSU. This expanded facility allows SVSU to boost recruitment of outstanding student-athletes in all sports and advance training opportunities. The indoor facilities also allows the university to host tournaments year-round.
The new attached field house features a 300-meter indoor track with a synthetic surface covering the infield for baseball, softball, football and soccer. The new track was chosen for its speed, performance and resilience to hardening over time, providing a safe surface for athletes.
Cost-effective and energy-efficient materials were chosen to create the skin of the field house, allowing for more room in the budget for athletic components such as the track surface, locker rooms and training areas. To create interest across the immense size of the building, the insulated metal panels were designed within a standard color range to create a staggered pattern along the facade. In other areas, large pieces of polycarbonate panels were chosen as composite elements, which also aid in providing more light to the sports field. Moreover, the facility uses bold graphics and school colors to proudly communicate the SVSU Cardinals brand.
