Mission Leisure Centre Renovation and Expansion

Mission, BC
Construction Cost: $16 million (Canadian)
Area / Square Feet: 144,000
Occupancy Date: September 2005

The Mission Leisure Centre was originally constructed in the late 1960s and saw incremental and disjointed growth over the following decades — resulting in a facility that functioned poorly, had convoluted circulation and failed to even marginally meet current facility standards.

Located amid a scenic mountain backdrop in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, the renovated Mission Leisure Centre was integrated into the existing fabric of the facility and became a significant community destination space. The addition of approximately 71,000 square feet established new circulation patterns, and the main entrance was relocated and redeveloped.

The facility now includes an NHL-sized ice arena, a leisure pool and 25-meter lap pool, a fitness center, squash and racquetball courts, a gymnasium, an outdoor water park, reconfigured outdoor sports fields and a wellness suite.

The exterior was carefully designed to provide outdoor recreational activities within a natural setting and to establish massing and elevations that reflect the modern, forward-looking spirit of the community. The buildings are at once functional and exuberant without appearing too formal.
