The Bill Gies Recreation Centre is configured in a simple linear shape placed in an east-west direction on the site to emphasize a clear circulation route linking the building’s indoor “street” and main entrance to the other development components. These include the health center, parking lots, outdoor soccer fields, a playground, a skatepark, Erbhaven Trails, future arena expansion and a future outdoor pool. Moreover, the building is strategically located near the corner of the site, aligning with other developments and improving visibility from traffic approaching the intersection.
The two main building elements — the arena and gymnasium — have been planned along with several community rooms in a simple linear layout connected by a central pedestrian “street.” Expansive glass walls provide clear sightlines into the main recreation spaces, to the interior entrances to senior and youth centers, and to the central reception desk. The vertical circulation core features an open and wide convenience stair wrapping around the brightly colored elevator shaft.
The building’s simple shape and exterior finishes are inspired by the local agricultural vernacular of simple barn structures. Each programmatic volume varies in size, height and use, and each expresses its own interior and exterior character, yet they read as a cohesive composition through a common material palette and similar detailing. Glazing is used wherever possible to bring natural light into the public areas and to visually connect the main spaces inside the building to the exterior landscape and outdoor amenities, especially when touring the facility on the walking track.
