The Morgridge Strength & Performance Lab transforms the strength and conditioning experience for Plymouth State University students and athletes in a renovated field house. At 17,500 square feet, it is the largest strength and conditioning facility in NCAA Division III athletics.
The renovation triples capacity, significantly enhancing university recruitment and retention, and plays a crucial role in the hands-on learning of clinical-academic programs. The lab is equipped with 24 weight racks and platform lifting stations, along with treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, weight training machines, and a 45-yard strip of synthetic turf dedicated to rehabilitation, functional and speed training, ensuring each team has ideal training resources. The design celebrates Plymouth State University’s branding through experiential graphics and interior design to brighten the once-dark space.
Prior to the renovation, the facility could only accommodate one or two of the 25 varsity teams at a time, forcing many student-athletes to train late into the evening. The new design was driven by the urgent need to expand the university’s resources, aiming to enhance spaces for athletes, students and staff. The design also incorporates new electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems, reducing the university’s carbon footprint while improving air quality, energy efficiency and thermal comfort. Lighting was strategically designed and placed to prevent visual discomfort or distraction.
