While adding square footage to the existing Building 5 on the Des Moines

Area Community College campus, the project design is organized around a main circulation zone that runs east-west through the building on a diagonal, connecting the main public entrance to the central campus quad. A black box theater and flexible meeting rooms are built as additions to the existing building to allow the required higher volumes. Renovated program space within the student union portion of the building includes administrative offices, a campus bookstore, a newspaper office, a food court, meeting and

study space, a computer lab, and gaming and additional student lounge space.

The recreation portion of the addition is two stories to accommodate an upper-level weights and fitness area and running track. The first floor includes a natatorium with pools for leisure and competition, gymnasiums, and a lobby area. Other program spaces include racquetball courts, group exercise studios, a therapy pool suite and a family center with a child watch

area. The recreation facility is open to local residents and the Ankeny School District, as well as DMACC Students, with the therapy pool suite being managed by UnityPoint Health and shared with all other entities.

The college intends to integrate its academic programs into the facility,

engaging students and the public in programs from early-childhood management to sports management and physical therapy management. All amenities have the goal of enriching the college experience for students while improving the wellness of the community.
