As part of New York City’s Universal Physical Education Initiative, the Bronx High School for the Visual Arts Gymnasium Annex brings a long-needed, dedicated athletics facility to the school. The dynamic space features basketball and volleyball courts, retractable bleachers and a folding partition for flexible programming.
Designed for both function and aesthetics, the gymnasium is flooded with natural light from skylights, while acoustic wood paneling enhances sound quality. The red brick and gray concrete masonry exterior is punctuated with cast stone and red metal panels, creating a bold yet contextual addition to the school. Inside, a cohesive palette of red, gray and white reflects school colors, with a wood slat ceiling unifying the double-height vestibule and gymnasium. Locker rooms and restrooms feature energetic tile patterns that add vibrancy to the space.
Despite a challenging site with steep grades and an adjacent subway line, the design seamlessly integrates an outdoor basketball court within a landscaped plaza, expanding recreation options. The court, adorned with a mural by Thrive Collective under the direction of Chris “Daze” Ellis and John “Crash” Matos, transforms the space into a celebration of art and sport.
Beyond aesthetics, the annex is a smart, durable facility with carefully planned circulation, maximizing space efficiency while ensuring accessibility. More than a gym, this project delivers a vibrant, multifunctional environment that supports physical education while reinforcing the school’s artistic identity — an inspiring model for urban athletic design
