Indoor recreation space is always at a premium, even at one of the largest rec centers in the country.
In designing the $75.2 million, 234,000-square-foot Williston Area Recreation Center in North Dakota, JLG Architects of Grand Forks and Denver-based Sink Combs Dethlefs heeded the desire of district officials to build flexibility into the facility's three racquetball courts — amenities the community expressly wanted, but ones susceptible to swings in the sport's popularity. Each court was wired for power and data, allowing for the future and periodic installation of sports simulators (which can range in price from $10,000 to $50,000) within the racquetball spaces. For now, Williston patrons can practice their golf games on popular virtual courses during the long winter months, or engage in tournament play with other members — their skills on display through the glass walls that front each court.
