Supervising with Impact: Leveraging Power Skills to Lead a Changing Workforce
Jenny Larson - Director, Health, Recreation and Wellness at Auburn University Recreation & Wellness
Larry Mellinger - Director of University Recreation at University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Today's workplace presents unique challenges for supervisors at all levels. With multiple generations working side by side, increasing numbers of early-career professionals moving rapidly into leadership roles, and the integration of "second career" professionals bringing diverse industry perspectives, supervisors must develop new approaches to team leadership and talent development. These demographic shifts, combined with evolving expectations around work-life boundaries and professional growth, require supervisors to expand their leadership toolkit and adapt their management style to meet diverse team needs.
This session focuses on key principles from the U.S. Surgeon General's Framework for Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being and the Leadership Pipeline model. Participants will assess their current leadership approaches, learn and practice specific supervision techniques, and identify key areas for their own professional growth. Through current research and practical examples, you'll learn specific techniques for building power skills such as self-management, emotional intelligence, intercultural fluency, problem solving, and coaching. Whether you're new to supervision or looking to enhance your existing leadership skills, you'll leave with concrete tools to help you lead more effectively.
