Following 10 important steps before, during and after a critical incident can keep swimmers safe and aquatic facility operators out of legal trouble.

When an aquatic facility opens its doors every day, its staff members should assume that an incident could occur that will require the implementation of an emergency action plan. While the likelihood is small that such an incident actually will take place - based on recent lifeguard surveys, experts consider more than one life-saving attempt per year per lifeguard at a public pool to be high - all employees still must be prepared for the worst.
