According to WYMT, lifeguards pulled the unresponsive child from the water at Paradise Cove Aquatic Center on Monday. The team performed CPR until paramedics arrived and transported Yancey-Hardwick to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Paradise Cove Aquatic Center will be closed for the remainder of the week while pool management investigates the incident.
“The City of Richmond is deeply saddened to learn that the child involved in today’s incident at Paradise Cove has tragically passed away at the hospital,” said the city in an official statement. “The Richmond Police Department is actively collaborating with the pool management company to gather all relevant information and conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The pool will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the child’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”
City officials told WBONTV that Yancey-Hardwick and his family were from out of town, visiting Richmond. The incident has prompted local swim schools to share their sympathies with the family and the public, emphasizing the importance of swim lessons to prevent children from drowning, especially with the upcoming Fourth of July holiday in the U.S.
“This was a little kid having a good day with his family … and he went under in the blink of an eye with someone right there,” a witness shared.
