An aquatics center in Green Bay, Wis., has determined the facility's water slides will either need to be replaced and repaired before they can be safely used by patrons.
The city had an inspection performed April 8 of the Joannes and Resch aquatics centers. While the Resch came out without issue, Joannes needs some repairs.
"In summary, what they are saying is the slides are not safe to open to the public in the condition they are currently in," sGreen Bay Parks director Dan Ditscheit told the local Fox affiliate.
The city is now trying to decide whether to replace or repair the slides.
"The cost to replace would be either $1-1.5 million, depending on the height of the slides and how many you replace," Ditscheit said. "Until we do one or the other, those slides are closed to the public."
Ditscheit said that eliminating the slides is not an option right now, as the public overwhelmingly wants the slides.
Repairs, which were initially estimated at $52,600 have actually come in at around $75,000.
In total, maintenance costs came in at around $1.5 million for 2026. Last year, the city released a $9.45 million renovation plan, which includes a lazy river, surf ride and mini golf, as well as improvements to the current structure.
The proposal will now go to the Green Bay City Council. If approved, the slides will open for the season on June 7.
