Pomp Sports Performance Center Unveiled
More than 30 years after they left campus, Brad Pomp '92 and Shannon Nunnally Pomp '93 still credit their Longwood experience as foundational to the success they have enjoyed as business owners, professionals, and civically engaged members of their Oviedo, Florida, community.
As longtime supporters of their alma mater, they have paid that forward by funding scholarships and initiatives designed to provide that same transformative experience for the Lancers that have followed in their footsteps.
With the Pomps in attendance for the formal dedication, Longwood students and staff packed the state-of-the-art facility for a ribbon-cutting and remarks from President W. Taylor Reveley IV, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Hall, student-athletes and the Pomps.
Little Rock Athletics Imagines New Facilities, Seeks Donors
University of Arkansas at Little Rock Director of Athletics Frank Cuervo unveiled a program-wide fundraising campaign Thursday that could lead to sweeping changes for the athletic department and campus as a whole.
Speaking before a formal gathering of Little Rock donors, boosters and alumni, Cuervo shared plans for a new on-campus baseball facility that would sit on the south end of the campus on land previously donated by the Coleman Dairy corporation. A basketball operations center would be built next to the Jack Stephens Center, with new coaching offices, a war room and sports medicine resources. The men’s and women’s golf teams would also receive an indoor golf training center that would be accessible to team members 24 hours a day.
Along with an improved infrastructure, Cuervo said that the money raised would also go toward upping the pay athletes receive via NIL opportunities as well as recently-legislated revenue sharing. The salary pool for coaching staff would also receive a bump.
Community Court Rehab Project Celebrated With Ribbon Cutting
UChicago Medicine, the Valparaiso University Department of Athletics and Valpo Parks celebrated the completion of the Community Court Rehabilitation Project at Will Park in Valparaiso at a ribbon-cutting ceremony that took place earlier this week.
Emcee Todd Ickow, the longtime play-by-play voice of Valpo Athletics, recognized representatives in attendance from UChicago Medicine, Valpo Athletics, Valpo Parks, BSN, EverLine Coatings, the City of Valparaiso and community partners. The revitalized court will help provide a space for youth development, community health and neighborhood connections.
“We’re very grateful for our partnership with UChicago Medicine,” Director of Athletics Laurel Hosmer said. “We care a lot about our community. Our name is one and the same with Valparaiso. It’s important for us to come to the community. Having the opportunity to invest in a basketball court rehabilitation project like this is incredible, and it’s part of how we build the next generation of student-athletes.”
