A Scheduling Fix for Fair Use of Fields

"Cooperative coordination" leads to fair field-use schedules

594Many parks and recreation departments currently use some form of computerized reservation system to schedule the use of their sports fields. Most also rely on outside sports organizations such as AYSO, Little League, Pop Warner and Bobby Sox to run the leagues that use the fields. Because these groups are comprised primarily of volunteers, they have particular needs with regard to field use that cannot be adequately addressed solely through the use of a computer scheduling program. To best serve the needs of all sports field users, parks and recreation departments should supplement their automated system with some kind of allocation planning system rather than a first-come, first-served method, and develop what is called a cooperative coordination process between field users and owners.
