The Florida Gulf Coast University campus recreation center is stepping into the future with wearable technology.

According to WGCU News, the FGCU rec center introduced E-Gym, a system that combines bracelets and smart technology to create and track personalized workouts for students and users. The bracelets use “radio-frequency identification technology” to connect with the central device and provide personalized programming to users.

There is even a leaderboard for students to compete against one another as they track their fitness.

“We saw a need for additional strength training equipment, and some of our older cardio pieces were not getting the proper usage,” said Jenny Louisa, facility operations and membership sales for FGCU campus rec. “Our senior director at the time knew someone at E-Gym, and it led to us being part of their involvement in campus recreation spaces.”

The E-Gym system will conduct fitness tests and strength assessments for users to guide workouts and target certain muscle groups.

The program, which has been in use at FGCU since January, has onboarded over 600 students. A return rate of 88% includes 52% female users and 48% male users. Students at FGCU receive their wearable technology for free with their student ID.

“It can really help beginners to the gym adjust,” campus rec employee Rachel told ENTV. “You can connect your phone to the E-Gym app and track all of your workouts.”
