Minor League Stadium Becomes Temporary Golf Course

The canceled minor league season has led a baseball stadium in Mississippi to transform into a modified golf course.

MGM Park, the home of the Biloxi Shuckers, has transitioned into a nine-hole chipping course to help earn revenue during the COVID-19 pandemic that kept the Shuckers off the field all season.

“Golf is a perfect way to enjoy the outdoors, practice safe social distancing and enjoy a summer day on the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” Shuckers general manager Hunter Reed said in a team press release. “We wanted to offer something unique with this crossover between baseball and golf that people can’t get anywhere else and allow our community to enjoy this great facility while we await Minor League Baseball’s return.”

The field — temporarily named “Schooner’s Landing” — is a nine-hole course during the day, then transitions into a target challenge at 4:15 p.m.. There are nine tee boxes in the ballpark, including one at home plate. Players will hit two balls from each tee box, attempting to land within a small ring signifying each green.

“We have a circle in the center,” assistant general manager Trevor Matifes explained, according to WLOX-TV. “You’ll get a birdie if you hit it there. It’s a par if you hit onto the green. Anywhere else is a bogey. For our target challenge, we’ll provide teams with a scorecard and different holes, different targets are different points.”

Pricing starts at $25 per person, while golf clubs lower than a seven-iron aren’t permitted on the small course. The Shuckers are a Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
