San Angelo is getting a new 24/7 fitness center, with Fitness 1440 planning to open a 15,000-square-foot facility within Sunset Mall.

Set to open this fall, San Angelo's Fitness 1440 will be the sixth in Texas, with 41 locations nationwide. The center will be by the south entrance, across from Ulta, in what was previously Barbed Wire & Roses - which has moved to another location in the mall.

"Our vision is to give back to the community, lead by example and be a fun and positive change to San Angelo, all while being the number one resource to help people achieve their health and fitness goals," Chris DeLeon, the franchise owner, said in a press release.

DeLeon said he, his wife and his father, Dolby Gray, started looking into opening the center in May 2017, traveling to the franchise headquarters in Georgia and visiting other Fitness 1440 locations.

The trio traveled to about eight other Fitness 1440's, DeLeon said, and without telling employees that they were interested in purchasing one, "Everyone we visited made us feel like family."

"My wife and I, we enjoy working out," DeLeon said. "We go to the gym quite a bit and take pride in our appearance and we just want to spread that and show our passion to everybody else."

The center will have free weights, machines, personal trainers, as well as various classes including High Intensity Interval Training, Yoga with Les Mills and cycling.

There are several differences between current fitness centers in San Angelo and Fitness 1440, DeLeon said.

The machines will have counters and wifi capability, allowing members to connect through their phone or smart watches and receive a report of their workout by email. The center will also have a Cardio Theater that will have a large projection screen, speakers and lowered lighting for members who need a distraction while exercising or prefer not to be observed during their workout.

Additionally, each time a member checks in at the gym on Facebook, a donation will be made to a local charity, the release states.

"We wanted a gym whose priorities are to make every member feel like family and be an influential part of our community," DeLeon said. "Fitness 1440 embodies those things."

The center plans to employ 15 people. A membership campaign will be announced prior to opening. Membership pricing will be $20-$40 per month, depending on which package is chosen, DeLeon said.
