Connecticut Pushes Winter Sports Start

The winter high school sports season in Connecticut was originally set to begin on Nov. 21, but that date has been pushed due to the state’s COVID-19 situation.

The Hartford Courant reports that the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference is scheduled to meet on Nov. 17 to discuss a new start date. Member schools will be given time to review the CIAC’s winter sports plan, and to discuss it with local health officials.

The CIAC is hoping for additional guidance from the state Department of Public Health, which it expects “very soon.”

CIAC executive director Glenn Lungarini said to expect a coordinated effort.

"Looking at the numbers, and as we have conversations with our sports medicine committee, and the governor’s office and the DPH, we’ll get a better understanding of what may be the best practice in terms of starting,” Lungarini told the Courant.

According to data published by the state, on Friday Connecticut saw more than 1000 new cases of the virus, and a daily test positivity rate of 3.6.

Meanwhile, governor Ned Lamont has mandated that masks be worn for moderate-risk indoor sports, such as basketball and hockey.
