INDIANAPOLIS – USA Football, the sport’s national governing body and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, announced today that Dr. Michael McCrea of the Medical College of Wisconsin has joined its board of directors.
The USA Football Board of Directors is comprised of leaders in education, medicine and sport. Board members guide and help USA Football to establish important standards and programs to advance the sport for high school, youth and other amateur-level players.
McCrea is a tenured professor and eminent scholar of neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he also serves as co-director of the Center for Neurotrauma Research (CNTR). Certified by the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology, he currently is co-principal investigator on the NCAA-Department of Defense CARE Consortium and works as a neuropsychology consultant for the Green Bay Packers. McCrea served as a panelist on the 2008, 2012 and 2016 International Consensus Conferences on Sports Concussion and has served on several international expert panels related to research and clinical care for traumatic brain injury (TBI) during the past two decades.
“Our board’s direction and expertise has helped USA Football evolve and grow our sport for the benefit of athletes and coaches across football,” USA Football CEO SCOTT HALLENBECK said. “I am excited for Dr. McCrea to bring his exceptional credentials and expertise to the football family we serve.”
McCrea is also an active researcher in the neurosciences. He authored the text Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Concussion Syndrome: The New Evidence Base for Diagnosis and Treatment published by Oxford University Press. He’s led several large, multi-center studies on the effects of TBI and sport-related concussion. Additionally, McCrea has an appointment as a research neuropsychologist at the Clement Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee. He is a past president of the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology (AACN) and is current president of the American Psychological Association’s Society for Clinical Neuropsychology (SCN).
“The medical community within sports circles recognizes USA Football among the most innovative and significant national governing bodies of sport today,” said McCrea. “I look forward to contributing to the board and advancing 21st-century football for the millions of athletes who love to play our country’s favorite sport.”
USA Football educates more high school and youth coaches combined than any organization in the United States. As the only U.S. Olympic Committee member dedicated solely to football, the organization designs and delivers premier educational, developmental and competitive programs for coaches, athletes and administrators.
