Facility One of First Universities to Offer Flex Streaming Fitness Content for At Home Students; Now Available to All College Campuses

Monmouth, Oregon, August, 2020 – While many college fitness centers across the country closed their doors earlier this year to students during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Western Oregon University, Monmouth, Ore. employed a new FitnessOnDemand solution to keep student members engaged and active during those months of lock down measures. The move proved so popular with students that campus recreation management is now looking to further integrate live and virtual fitness offerings as students return in some form in the Fall.

“We had already started integrating FitnessOnDemand digital content and virtual classes into our programming when the pandemic closed our campus in March,” says Zach Hammerle, assistant director campus recreation, Western Oregon University. “Because of our location 45 miles south of Portland we had experienced trouble recruiting top instructors for live classes and had decided to add digital content to bolster our member fitness offerings. When Covid-19 hit we immediately talked to our FitnessOnDemand team to use their FLEX, a new streaming tool, so we could continue to provide classes, workouts and wellness content to students at home. That proved enormously successful.”

Western Oregon used on-site, in-studio FitnessOnDemand for two full semesters as part of the campus’ recreation facility’s mix of fitness offerings. When Covid-19 brought stay-at-home orders for all students and faculty, they pivoted to FLEX to stream everything from high intensity classes to mind and body stress management meditations to students at home. As interest boomed in the service, FitnessOnDemand classes were integrated into Western Oregon’s Instagram Live fitness feed to promote the offering to more members.

“At first we had ten, then 50, then more students signing in and working out,” adds Hammerle. “But very quickly that number jumped to people using the content three times a week and coming back for more. We’re taking the summer now to examine all of the usage data, to determine which classes and content types engaged the most students, and will be looking at integrating our bricks and mortar live class offerings with more digital content when everyone hopefully returns in the Fall.”

Onsite FitnessOnDemand and streaming FLEX products are immediately available to all college recreation and fitness facilities managers looking to optimize their fitness offerings for the new – and uncertain - academic year in Fall 2020 and beyond. Products enable any recreation operator to give student members access to hundreds of curated classes, specific workouts, stretches, cool downs and wellness content from industry leading brands. Content creators include FitFusion by Jillian Michaels, Daily Burn, SH1FT, Zumba & Strong by Zumba, Sweat Factor, GymRa and many more. Current FitnessOnDemand equipped campus customers can simply add the new FLEX option to their existing systems and provide either 50, 200 or 500 licenses to their members, with enterprise level licenses also available. New campus recreation customers can request FLEX directly with FitnessOnDemand.
