Vanderbilt University recently pulled off a rare feat by avoiding a fine after fans delayed rushing the field following the team's win over LSU on Oct. 18.
SEC policy requires a fine of $500,000 for a violation of the league’s access to competition area policy in all sports. For conference contests, fines are paid to the opposing institution.
However, the policy allows for member institutions to adopt an institutional policy that permits fans to celebrate on the playing surface once all visiting team personnel and game officials have safely exited the field or court. The school must submit the plan to the conference office in advance and communicate the policy to fans. If all visiting team personnel and game officials are safely off the playing surface prior to fans entering the field or court, then the home institution may avoid the prescribed penalty.
Near the end of the LSU at Vanderbilt game, Vanderbilt communicated to spectators it would permit fans to enter the field after the visiting team cleared the field. Vanderbilt fans remained in the stands until the opposing team and officials had exited the playing field.
The SEC’s access to competition area policy was originally adopted by a vote of Conference members in 2004 and financial penalties were increased by actions taken by the membership in 2015, 2023 and 2025.
