For technology and fitness buffs everywhere, Christmas may be coming extra early this year.
The annual Consumer Electronics Show — scheduled to kick off Jan. 7 in Las Vegas — is the place to be to check out the latest in fitness technology, led by a growing trend in wearable fitness devices.

The annual Consumer Electronics Show — scheduled to kick off Jan. 7 in Las Vegas — is the place to be to check out the latest in fitness technology, led by a growing trend in wearable fitness devices.
“The wearables section and digital health sections are going to be huge this year,” Consumer Electronics Association president Gary Shapiro told Bloomberg last week. “If participation is a judge for both markets, then it should be pretty significant.”
Projected by Juniper Research to develop into a $19 billion dollar industry by 2018, smart wearable technology will take center stage at this year’s show in a new TechZone called WristRevolution. Ten manufacturers will reveal new activity-monitoring devices that can track measurements as basic as a runner’s speed, to more complex measurements such as heart rate, skin temperature and even perspiration.
Basis, a company built around its wrist-based tracking device, will be showing its new Carbon Steel Edition wristband, in addition to a new REM sleep analysis feature. Other new wristbands will include Fitbug’s newest Fitbug Orb activity tracker and wristbands from Kronoz and Qualcomm. Wearable tech is also going beyond basic wristbands and clips, including sensor-embedded clothing and Reebok’s skull cap.
After its unveiling last April, CES 2014 will also mark the emergence of Google Glass as a growing player in fitness technology sector. Technogym, a leading producer in technology fitness equipment, will unveil the first Google Glass-controlled treadmill. The glasses will enable users to receive feedback on their training through Google Glass’ lens. Paired with an android-based display console for training equipment, users will be able to develop their own personalized fitness program and even communicate with a personal trainer via webcam.
CES spans four days and will be held in the Convention Center and World Trade Center in Las Vegas. It is estimated more than 152,000 people will attend to see the newest devices from over 3,200 exhibitors this year.
