A high school football coach who was suspended from coaching by the Alabama High School Athletic Association has been assigned to work at a local junior high as an in-school suspension teach.
According to the St. Clair Times, Jake Ganus, who is on suspension from coaching this year, is now assigned to work at Duran Junior High School as an in-school suspension (ISS) teacher.
Ganus had been hired originally as a secondary teacher, as well as head football coach, at Pell City High School before his suspension from coaching over allegations of improper recruiting measures within the PCHS football program that are outlined by AHSAA in the notice.
According to his initial employment contract signed in December 2025, Ganus’s salary was based upon a 12-month teacher contract of $66,954, along with a head football coach supplement of $63,046.
Following the 2026-2027 season suspension from coaching issued by the AHSAA in May, Ganus’s status and salary was changed to that of the salary he received as a classroom teacher. The salary paid for coaching was then removed.
The AHSAA suspension penalty eliminates Pell City High School from Class 5A region standing during the 2026-2027 season, along with no participation in postseason play for 2026.
PCHS representatives are also required to appear before AHSAA’s Central Board of Control July 29 in Montgomery to “present a comprehensive action plan and the internal controls that have been implemented,” according to the notice released May 20 by AHSAA executive director Heath Harmon.
