“In the interest of fairness,” the Gym Lake Orion in Orion Township, Mich., will be charging women only two-thirds of the cost of the membership price for men, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The gym ran a front-page promotion in the Ad-Vertiser that read, “Ever wonder why XY>XX? WE DO! The Gym values its male members tremendously but we don't value them a THIRD more than our female members!”
Gym operator Rich Garvin says the move is meant to address the pay gap between men and women. “It's just difficult to observe injustice or unfairness. I think it's important that we don't sit idly by ... if we do, we condone it. And I don't condone it,” he said.
Garvin also assured members that he won’t be raising anyone’s membership fee.
