A 15-year-old high school football player collapsed and died after a practice session earlier this week.

Baton Rouge, La., ABC affiliate WBRZ reports that rising sophomore Terrance Allen was in the locker room at Amite High School when he collapsed around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. First responders rushed to the scene, and performed CPR on Allen before he was transported to the hospital and later died.

The boy’s mother was reportedly waiting to pick up her son in the parking lot when the ambulance first arrived. She rushed to the locker room after the emergency responders, and saw her son on the floor.

“They were working on him and all I could say was ‘save my child, bring my child back to me,’” she told WBRZ.

The Louisiana High School Athletics Association posted a message of support on Twitter:

It’s unclear what led to Allen’s death. A preliminary autopsy found no trauma, and Allen had no known medical conditions. However, additional tests will be conducted to determine whether an unknown medical condition or the heat played a role in the teenager’s death.
