A positive COVID-19 test result among Tier 1 personnel has caused St. Lawrence University to withdraw from the NCAA men’s hockey tournament.

St. Lawrence claimed the ECAC Hockey conference title with a victory over Quinnipiac on Saturday, but announced the decision to withdraw on Sunday.

"I'm extremely sorry that this group has lost the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Tournament," head coach Brent Brekke said in a release. "It was my own test that came back positive today. The roller coaster of emotions in the last 24 hours for everyone is unimaginable. Last night we are holding the trophy above our heads and today we are shaking our heads in disbelief that the season is over. This hurts. But the one thing that can't be taken away from this team — they are champions."

Quinnipiac, the ECAC Hockey tournament runner-up and regular-season champions, will instead claim the conference’s automatic bid to the tournament.

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament was also impacted by COVID-19, when Virginia Commonwealth University was forced to withdraw. VCU’s scheduled game against Oregon was declared a no-contest.
