Racist Snapchat Leads to Cancelled Football Season

Members of a middle school football team in Virginia have sabotaged their season with a racist video posted to Snapchat.

Multiple outlets have reported that members of the Short Pump Middle School football team posted a video to Snapchat that showed white teammates simulating sex with their African American teammates, with the caption “We gonna (expletive) the black outta these African-American children from Uganda.”

Officials from Henrico County Public Schools have cancelled the remainder of the Short Pump football season as a punitive measure.

According to a report from the USA Today, those who were not involved in the incident will still participate in practices. Those practices will reportedly also include “discussions that focus on reporting responsibilities, accountability, ethics, sexual harassment, and racial tolerance.”

Virginia CBS affiliate WTVR on Tuesday reported that parents of students at the school are demanding the school take further action to remedy the situation. One woman said her son, who is on the football team but was not a part of the video, is receiving threats and is afraid to go to school.

A public meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday where parents will be able to speak directly to the school board.
