A 16-year-old student at Rome (Ga.) High School collapsed on an off-campus soccer field last week and later died.
Atlanta News Now, citing an online fundraiser, identified the boy as Bairon Candido Ramos Vicente. Atlanta News Now described Vicente as a Rome High School junior soccer player.
The cause of death has not been made public, and though the incident itself was not related to Rome High School, the school district released the following statement:
“Rome City Schools is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a Rome High School student. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and loved ones,” the district said in a statement.
“Bairon passed away doing what he loved and being with his friends,” the family's statement read. “He never really was the type to talk much, but he always managed to put a smile on everyone’s face, and he will be forever missed.”
The fundraiser seeks to cover the costs of hospital and funeral expenses.
“His passing has left a deep pain in the hearts of his family, friends and classmates,” the fundraiser said.
