Milwaukee (Wis.) County Parks has proposed a speed limit for e-bike riders on paths where bicycles are allowed.
The proposal, which was obtained by WISN 12 News, calls for a 15-mph speed limit.
Milwaukee County Parks said e-bikes are growing in popularity, especially in parks, and can add to the congestion along trails, which can increase the risk of crashes.
"If you don't have anything on the books, you can't enforce anything," said Milwaukee County supervisor Steve Taylor. "Just driving around Franklin and Old Creek, these e-bikes or e-motos are everywhere, crossing multiple lanes of traffic, not paying attention, going 20, 30 miles an hour. Extremely dangerous."
Taylor hopes the limit will make park paths safer for everyone.
"The simple fact of we've already banned e-motos and then e-bikes that go, you know, 28 miles an hour. We don't want to ban them; they just need to be used properly," Taylor said.
How law enforcement will enforce the speed limit is still being determined.
