A fan fell Sunday from an escalator inside Pittsburgh's Acrisure Stadium and later died from his injuries.

The incident happened after the Steelers lost their game against the visiting New York Jets.

As reported by The Associated Press, Pittsburgh Public Safety stated that at 4:45 p.m. Eastern time, Pittsburgh police and Emergency Medical Services responded to the male attendee who fell from the escalators. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, then later died from the injuries he suffered. The man's identity had not been released as of Monday morning.

“We are aware of an unfortunate incident that occurred inside Acrisure Stadium today,” the Steelers said in a statement. “We are working with local authorities and helping their investigation into the matter. We are sending our thoughts and prayers to the guest’s family.”

Fatal falls within stadiums are an all-too-common occurrence. In August, a woman died from injuries suffered after falling from an escalator railing at Denver's Empower Field at Mile High. It was that stadium's third fall-related fatality since 2015, according to AB.

According to Sports Illustrated, an investigation is opening up regarding the Acrisure Stadium incident, as Pittsburgh Public Safety noted “the Mobile Crime Unit responded to process the scene, and VCU is heading the investigation.”
